Competency 2—Engage Diversity and Difference in Practice

The journey that is cultural humility has been insightful and kind. The below artifact is an entry from a journal I’ve been keeping to self-assess and reflect throughout my practicum experience. I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to engage with diversity and difference. Recognizing socioeconomic (in addition to racial/ethnic) diversity has been extremely beneficial. I’ve been fortunate to hear stories and narratives not often presented to me in my daily personal life. This has provided more insight regarding the systemic issues that affect our country. There is a unifying aspect to this recognition in that the social justice policies I promote help large swaths of our population (some of whom appear at odds with each other).

“Week 5 Practicum Reflection (2/14/21)

My practicum is moving along well. This week I had an opportunity to reflect upon and address issues relating to Competency 2 (Engage Diversity and Difference in Practice). I was born and raised in the diverse and relatively progressive San Francisco Bay Area. This has undoubtedly influenced my worldview and political leanings. I took notice that most clients over the last month are of demographics I have not had much interaction within my personal life. Many are conservative working-class individuals from rural communities across the United States. I am taking this as a learning opportunity to engage with difference. As a social worker I need to be mindful that my purpose is to be a helper to all people (regardless of whether we disagree on XZY). Compounding the sense of urgency is the fact that this demographic accounts for a substantial number of overdoses and deaths of despair in recent years. Thus far, my experiences have been genuine, positive, and relatable. Mindful of my personal biases, I recognized that my values, beliefs, and opinions did not interfere with my ability to form connections.”
