Throughout my practicum field work and career as a drug counselor, I’ve embraced and developed standards of ethical and professional behavior. I’ve worked to ensure that my daily practice aligns with my personal values as well standards established by the California Consortium of Addiction Professionals and Programs and the National Association of Social Workers’ (NASW) Code of Ethics. I’ve exercised professional and ethical behavior in a variety of ways. An example of my daily exercise relates to issues of confidentiality. Standard 1.07 (Privacy and Confidentiality) of the NASW Code of Ethics states that “Social workers should discuss with clients and other interested parties the nature of confidentiality and limitations of clients’ right to confidentiality.” In an effort to maintain compliance in this regard, I’ve ensured that all my electronic communications contain necessary notices of confidentiality.
